Zomba – 68 Km – 1 hour drive from Balntyre
Zomba was the capital of British Central Africa and then Nyasaland before the establishment of the Republic of Malawi in 1964.It has some interesting buildings and monuments. The Cobbe Barracks are home to what were the King’s African Rifles (now the Malawi Rifles) and a clock tower serves as their World War I memorial. The Gymkhana Club and old Residency of the first commissioner of Nyasaland are wonderful relics of the town’s colonial past. Zomba is also home to the University of Malawi, the old parliament buildings and one of the country’s State Houses. A small botanical garden and wonderfully sited golf course make the most of the lush low slopes of the plateau and also typical African produce Zomba market.
A days outing to Zomba is a must to those who love scenery and learning history of the country.
Mulanje & Thyolo – Blantyre to Thyolo 43. 6 Km 1 hr drive, Thyolo to Mulanje 44 Km 1 hr drive
The trip to Mulanje and Thyolo gives you an opportunity to relax as you see the beautiful scenery of the countryside on one hand and seemingly endless tea plantations on the other and on a luck day, witness the picking of tea as you drive.
The Mulanje Mountain, landscapes dominated by vibrant green tea estates which contrast with beautiful purple jacaranda trees. In the heart of this region is Malawi’s highest peak (the highest mountain in Central Africa – Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Zambia), Mount Mulanje, which rises to over 3,000 metres. The foothills of the mountain are covered in estates, woodlands, rivers and waterfalls and form a beautiful area.
A days outing to Mount Mulanje and to any one of the tea plantations can be arranged where you may enjoy tasting different varieties of tea/flavors.
Majete Wildlife Reserve – 70 Km – 1 ½ hrs drive from Blantyre
Majete Wildlife Reserve is a unique conservation and tourist destination for all visitors. The amazing success story of recovery and restoration and the continued protection of endangered species have led Majete to become one of the most popular reserves in Malawi.
Majete Wildlife Reserve is situated in the lower Shire valley in the South West of Malawi,
The story of Majete Wildlife Reserve is perhaps the most interesting of all parks in Malawi. In the late 1990s most species of large game had been eradicated, mainly as result of poor law enforcement and an inability to deal with poaching. In 2003, however, a project spearheaded by the government, in liaison with local communities and a NGO took control of the situation and turned it around so that the rehabilitation of the park could go ahead. Today, as a result of infrastructure development including new fences, tracks and waterholes, nearly 3,000 animals of 13 species have been introduced including black rhino, elephants, Lichtenstein’s, hartebeest and eland.
Majete Wildlife Reserves is the only protected area in Malawi where the famous big five can be seen.
A days outing can be arranged by leaving Blatyre at 7.00 am and start the safari tour on high, open vehicle with assistance of a tour guide to spot the different animals that inhabit the park and learn about the diversity of habitats and species. After the safari tour you may join a boat ride on the Shire River, watch the game from the river and the beautiful Kapichira Falls

Area
Blantyre
Blantyre is the Malawi’s commercial capital. Now with a population in excess of half a million, this settlement has its origins with the Scottish missionaries from the time of David Livingstone. (It is named after Livingstone’s birthplace in Scotland.) Today it is unquestionably the centre of Malawi’s industry and commerce.
Blantyre has a number of historical buildings of interest. Perhaps the most impressive is St Michael and All Angels church, built by men with no training in architecture, construction or even brick-making. Others include the original town hall (Old Boma) and Mandala House, built in 1882 as the headquarter of the African Lakes Company. It was Malawi’s first two-storey building and is believed now to be the country’s oldest house. Mandala House is host to the ‘The Society of Malawi’ which protects and nourishes a true treasure trove of the country’s history. With thousands of books and resources safely stored away, it provides an opportunity to find out a bit more about Malawi that perhaps many travelers don’t ever discover.
Climate
The climate of Blantyre is classified as a Tropical climate (Aw) and is greatly influenced by its location in the tropical zone and altitude. The city experiences the tropical continental climate with two distinct seasons in the year (three proper seasons). The rainy season is from November to April, with continuing light cold showers from end of May to July. The dry season is from May to October. The mean annual rainfall is 1,122 mm (44.17 in), of which about 80% falls within 3½ months between November and March.
The city is generally cool with mean monthly temperatures ranging from 19 °C (66 °F) during the cool season (May to July) to 26 °C (79 °F) during the hot season (September to November). There are particularly two spells of uncomfortable weather; the hottest season associated with high humidity soon before the onset of the first rains (end October to November), and the frost along rivers, mist and chilly showers and winds characteristic of the cold season in June and July.
